This hits hard. In September of last year, I was awakened by an odd noise from downstairs. My wife was up, as she usually is at that time, and is usually a ninja when she knows I have been working late.

But something wasn't right.

I came downstairs to find her on the floor, her eyes locked to one side, talking gibberish, one arm stretched out as she groaned.

A clot had blocked an artery to her brain. She was having a stroke. It was dumb luck or divine intervention that I woke up and found her. We got her to the hospital as quickly as humanly possible, and she has made a full recovery. It scares me to this day, what would have happened if I had slept in that morning.

I am so sorry for your loss, and I guess I have some idea what it must have been like, since it's the nightmare that plays in my head so often. We got lucky.

I don't know if it helps, and it's not something I talk about often, but a few years back I got a call from and old friend. It was a dream, but one of the most vivid dreams I have ever had. Malcolm called me from what he called "the other side". He passed several years back. He told me lots of things, mostly that the other side is more than he could even explain, and that he would see me there some day and I would understand.

Since then, I have come to believe that no one is ever truly lost, they're just waiting for us, just beyond the curtain of night.

All the best,

DSC

D. S., my heart goes out to you. I am so devastated, because I was here - but I didn't hear anything. No dogs barking, no warning - I thought everything was okay. I though she was just enjoying some extended alone time, talking her friends on Facetime...

But it wasn't okay. Nothing was okay.

It took me a little while to get to your beautiful tribute, Rebecca, but it was worth the wait. I hope you find consolation in knowing that Stephanie's last home here on earth was likely the one she needed to be in.
