Star Trek is my life-long love.
My Father’s adoration of it sprang from his work with the Space Program; that hopeful vision of life as it could be, lived among the stars, found its place with Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek. Aboard the Enterprise, we travelled with their crew to worlds unknown, finding warm friendship in the cold vastness of space…
their bond of Crew to Ship and comrade to comrade made the wide Universe a joy. But it all came back to the bond between to Spock and Kirk,: Id and Ego, Cold and Hot, Yin and Yang. They were the epitome of Masculine Friendship, a portrait forged from Roddenberry’s time at war. To this young girl, watching with my Father, I could not imagine a more beautiful thing than to travel space with these men by my side, with Kirk as my Captain -
and so I did.
We’ve travelled the stars together, you and I on this journey; we’ve shared this joy, through iterations good and bad, navigating the turbulences of misshapen interpretations and ‘modernised’ thinking. But through it all, the vision of the original never left, the memory of what was outshining any that came after. So it was with trepidation I followed the link that would take me to this moment -
and in this moment, the journey is complete.
In this tiny snippet of art, William Shatner and his Crew created the perfect and final transmutation of Star Trek’s soul. The circle is unbroken, the hand of Friendship restored, an incandescent affection transcendent of the medium which houses it. That love between friends, the real joining of hearts and minds that spans beyond time and space, was made real through the magic of something akin to the Holodeck Star Trek once predicted; but the soul is pure Humanity in all its beauty. In this moment, my Captain returned to take us on one final journey with him…
Boldly go.
Thank you for posting this.
Wow! Just wow.
